Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance Claims

If you suffer an injury or illness, and you have disability insurance, then you may be entitled to disability benefits. Disability benefits can include:

  • income replacement payments(bi-weekly, monthly);
  • reimbursement for medical and hospital expenses;
  • payment for rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, occupational therapy, etc); and
  • fixed payment for loss of body part or function (e.g., loss of arm, blindness, etc).

Many people have disability insurance through their employment benefits package; however, some people buy individual disability insurance on their own.

In order to receive disability benefits, you will have to submit an application, and provide supporting documentation, to the insurance company (this is also called "filing a claim").

The information below is intended to help you understand the disability insurance claims process.
